Speaker and Presentation Information

  • Geoff Mitchell, 3rd year Cancer Biology Ph.D. student
  • Customizable Presentation: I can give presentations on a variety of topics from cancer to genetics to medical ethics to biotechnology. As a Biotech fellow this year, I had a chance to bring biotechnology lab activities out to K-12 schools; I would love a chance to share some of these activities with your students (PCR, gel electrophoresis, microarray simulation, etc.).
  • My schedule is pretty open, especially if you let me know a few weeks in advance.
  • Can I speak about career/personal history? Sure!
  • About me? Well, I grew up in Maine just a few miles from the ocean and am an avid SCUBA diver. So what am I doing in the desert? Actually, I really like it here in Tucson, and there’s great diving in California and Mexico. I also enjoy hiking and camping, and I’m training to do some mountaineering in the near future.
  • Do I speak Spanish? I’m afraid not. I speak fluent French, but, unfortunately, that does me little good in this part of the country.

Speaker and Presentation Information

Kristin Block
Department of Planetary Sciences, M.S. candidate

  • Customizable Presentations: I would be happy to tailor lessons to specific learning goals.  I can speak on a variety of topics in planetary and space sciences including: Astrobiology— where scientists think conditions could be (or could have been) right for life to exist outside of planet Earth, how the building blocks of life got here, how space missions are tailored to search for life and minimize transport of microscopic life to other planets; Meteorites—rocks from space and what they can tell us about the beginnings of the solar system and life in it, how we can tell rocks are meteorites and if they are from an asteroid, Mars, or the Moon.  I can also speak on space missions, particular planets, and many other topics in planetary and space science.
  • I can bring a variety of visual aids depending on the topic, including meteorites, globes, and spacecraft models.
  • Subject areas: planetary and space science topics, astrobiology, space missions
  • Availability: Most weekdays
  • Can speak about career/personal history: I would be happy to talk about the path that led me to science as a career.
  • About me: I am originally from Miami, Florida, where I studied Music Performance and Education at the University of Miami.  While earning my music degree and for a while after, I taught music at a variety of levels in private lessons and in formal classrooms.  My love for science brought me back to school, and I earned a B.S. in Physics with minors in Geology and GIS.  During that time, I worked at a wonderful children’s science museum, educating children and adults about various topics in the physical sciences.  I began grad school in 2005, and worked with the Phoenix Mars Lander for a year and a half, before turning to more astrobiology-related topics.
  • Do you speak Spanish: limited functional Spanish
